The Yéil Koowú Shaawát (YKS) program is a culturally based counseling and treatment model for Native women in Southeast Alaska that integrates Western therapies with traditional Native healing practices to address domestic violence, child maltreatment, and intergenerational trauma. Evaluation found that the program strengthens cultural identity, promotes resilience and healing from trauma, and supports healthy parenting skills, with its collaborative and culturally grounded approach being key to its effectiveness and community trust.

The Yéil Koowú Shaawát (Raven Tail Woman) program is a culturally grounded, family-focused counseling and treatment curriculum for Native women in Southeast Alaska, addressing domestic violence, child maltreatment, unresolved grief, and intergenerational trauma. The evaluation found that the program strengthens cultural identity, restores connections to ancestors and future generations, and promotes resilience, healing, and healthy parenting through group work, traditional values, and Indigenous healing practices. High engagement, adaptability, and a strong sense of community contributed to participants reporting improved emotional awareness, coping skills, and positive changes in themselves and their families.
