Yéil Koowú Shaawát Evaluation Brief
The Yéil Koowú Shaawát (YKS) program is a culturally based counseling and treatment model for Native women in Southeast Alaska that integrates Western therapies with traditional Native healing practices to address domestic violence, child maltreatment, and intergenerational trauma. Evaluation found that the program strengthens cultural identity, promotes resilience and healing from trauma, and supports healthy parenting skills, with its collaborative and culturally grounded approach being key to its effectiveness and community trust.
